This workshop is an exciting opportunity to develop some core competencies required for treating underweight eating disorders.
The workshop is suitable for new and experienced clinicians working in the public sector or in an outpatient setting within private practice. The following issues will be covered over the 2 days of the interactive workshop designed to build knowledge and skills:
• Models of underweight disorders that explain causation and maintenance
• The important role of physical sequalae in maintaining underweight eating disorders and why medical monitoring, refeeding and nutritional health are urgent priorities in treatment
• Principles and evidence that should guide treatment, including the inclusion of significant others
• Treatment guidelines and an overview of evidence-based treatments for underweight eating disorders
• The importance and challenges of developing and working within a multidisciplinary team to provide the best care for patients
• Specialist supportive clinical management (SSCM): psychoeducation, focus on behaviour change related to eating, addressing the other maintaining factors
• Use of inpatient care: why and when?
• Resources for therapists.
Learning Objectives:
After the workshop, the participants will:
1. Understand the contributing and maintaining factors for anorexia nervosa
2. Understand the importance of multi-disciplinary input for medical and psychological and dietary management, and how these work together
3. Be aware of the major treatment guidelines and evidence-based treatments for anorexia nervosa
4. Have a deep understanding of the general principles that need to guide any interventions with anorexia nervosa
5. Understand how to use Supportive Specialist Clinical Management (SSCM) for anorexia nervosa in their own practice.
About the presenter:
Professor Wade is the Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Flinders University in Adelaide. She has worked clinically in the area of eating disorders for almost 30 years and has been working full time as an academic since 1999.
Professor Wade completed her Masters of Clinical Psychology at the Australian National University in 1992, a PhD at Flinders University in 1998, and a post-doctoral fellowship in the USA during 1999 at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioural Genetics.
Her current research interests are in perfectionism and the aetiology, prevention and treatment of eating disorders. She is the author of over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored three books.
Professor Wade has been awarded The Ian M. Campbell memorial prize for outstanding contribution to the scientific or professional status of Clinical Psychology in Australia in 2000 and the Australian Psychological Society Early Career Award in 2003.
Professor Wade is on the Management Committee responsible for the oversight and development of the Statewide Eating Disorders Service in South Australia and is a member of the federally funded Steering Committee of the National Eating Disorder Collaboration. In 2015 she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and in 2017 – 2018 she was president of Eating Disorder research Society. Professor Wade is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
