Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders

Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders

The Centre for Eating, Weight and Body Image

About this event

Dr Susan Simpson presents 11 hours of online training in schema therapy for eating disorders

Overview

This training will provide an opportunity to learn powerful techniques for working with people with eating disorders including those with high complexity & comorbidity (e.g. OCD, rigid personality traits, PTSD). This workshop will provide training in implementing techniques for working with entrenched early maladaptive schemas (including core beliefs) with individuals with eating disorders and comorbidity.

The workshop will provide participants with practical experience and guidance in the use of imagery, chair work & other techniques for change. Videos and live demonstrations will be used to illustrate experiential change techniques. Training will specifically include working with vulnerable [child] modes, limited reparenting skills, bypassing avoidant or overcompensatory coping modes, and fighting punitive (self-critical) or thinking patterns that drive eating disorder behaviours.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn the following:

  • How to recognise & work with schema modes relevant to people with eating disorders
  • How to conceptualise clients’ eating disorder symptoms & comorbidities using a schema mode map
  • How to apply cognitive, experiential, and interpersonal strategies for change, including chairwork and imagery
  • Rescripting, with an emphasis on deeper level change with core beliefs/schemas.

Pre-reading

Simpson, S. & Smith, E. (Eds.) (2019). Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders: Theory and Practice for Individual and Group Settings. Routledge. To familiarise yourself with the schema therapy mode model before the training, participants will be sent the chapter (‘Schemas, Modes Summary', Ch 2 Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Schema Therapy) which provides a good overview of the Schema Therapy Mode Model. Participants will also be sent a chapter on the topic of schema therapy for eating disorders from the Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Schema Therapy, and a brief Schema Therapy Clients Guide.

Online activities to be completed prior to the event

For those new to the Schema Mode Model, it is advised that you watch this two-hour webinar (https://youtu.be/kHL7aJntfbw). This will give you preliminary information that will provide a good base for you to learn about schema therapy for eating disorders.
