Gippsland event: The Overlap Between Performance and Eating Disorder Prevention

Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV)

About this event

This 90-minute workshop is aimed at coaches, parents, supporters and athletes involved in sport across all levels of competition.

The workshop will educate attendees on the overlap between striving for performance whilst supporting and promoting eating disorder prevention. The workshop will cover a range of the latest research that will include concepts such as The Female Athlete Triad, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), energy availability, eating disorder presentation in athletes and the disordered eating continuum.

It will further touch on some lesser known conditions commonly seen in sport that include compulsive exercise, orthorexia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Develop a foundational knowledge as to how performance can be effected through under-fuelling and improved through disordered eating prevention
  2. Understand the concepts of both Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and the Athlete Triad
  3. Explore how individuals in sporting cultures can shape positive food and body environments for athletes

This session will be facilitated by Georgie Buckley, Accredited Practising Dietitian & PhD Candidate Swinburne University of Technology. Georgie is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with a wealth of knowledge in the wellbeing of current and former athletes. She believes athletes must be considered as humans foremost when exploring their nutritional goals and overall wellbeing. Georgie is currently a PhD Candidate at Swinburne University of Technology and is studying disordered eating and body image in both current and former athletes. Georgie has worked previously with the Victorian Institute of Sport, Essendon Football Club, Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
