Strengethening Primary Care Responses

Date: Wednesday 26 April, 2026

Time: 12:00-1:00pm AEST

This forum will focus on the role of Primary Health Networks (PHNs) and the broader primary care workforce in improving responses to eating disorders. Join leaders and practitioners from across Australia to gain practical insights into initiatives, tools, and resources that can strengthen eating disorder responses in primary care. 
 
NEDC will outline the role of primary care providers within the stepped system of care for eating disorders and provide an overview of the key tools and resources available to support this work. Guest presenters from East Melbourne PHN and Murrumbidgee PHN will showcase local initiatives focused on GP education and psychosocial workforce development. These case studies will provide practical examples that PHNs and service providers can adapt and implement in their own regions. 
 
This event is designed for anyone responsible for, supporting, or interested in strengthening the primary care workforce’s capability to respond to eating disorders. This includes primary care providers, allied health professionals, PHN staff, service and team leaders, commissioners, and planners working across both general health and eating disorder–specific services.

Advancing Workforce Development Across the Stepped System of Care

Date: Wednesday 22 October, 2025

Time: 1:00-2:00pm AEDT. 

This forum focused on practical ways to build and support a strong workforce across different roles in the stepped system of care and across generalist and eating disorder-specific settings.

Speakers shared a model for long-term workforce development and highlighted tools and methods to help adapt workforce development initiatives to different services and workplaces, based on each service’s role and the needs of staff and service users.

Pathway to Progress: Advancing the National Eating Disorders Strategy

Date: Wednesday 5 March, 2025

Time: 1:00-2:00pm AEDT.

During this engaging session, NEDC provided an overview and update on the implementation and evaluation of the National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023–2033. Dr Sarah Trobe, NEDC National Director, shared insights into key activities to date and outlined the efforts and impacts of collaboration across the country.

Attendees heard from NEDC leaders about the implementation of Eating Disorder Safe Principles (Hilary Smith) and workforce initiatives (Dr Emma Spiel), and had the opportunity to submit questions during the Q&A.

What is the role of a dietitian in responding to eating disorders? A workshop to support action across the stepped system of care

Date: Wednesday 20 November, 2024

During this special 90-minute workshop, dietitians were supported to identify their role in the system of care and to devise strategies for driving systems-level change in eating disorders prevention and care. It draws upon NEDC’s stepped system of care framework, the National Eating Disorders Strategy, and implementation science frameworks to guide participants in developing actionable plans. 

Participants:

  • Developed/deepened their understanding about the eating disorder system of care and the role of dietitians across prevention, identification, and response to eating disorders across role and context and as part of the multidisciplinary team  

  • Developed/deepened their understanding of approaches to systems-level service change to improve care for people experiencing or at risk of an eating disorders, their families, supports and communities 

  • Identified change targets and levers for change at national, regional, and service level within their own contexts which align with the National Strategy 

  • Learned frameworks, models and approaches to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of systems-level change, underpinned by best practice evidence in implementation science  

  • Developed strategies and tools to drive service and system reform relevant to their own context(s), including the identification of information, resources, and connections to support action 

This workshop was hosted by NEDC, with the support of Amanda Davis (Queensland Eating Disorders Service), Copeland Winten (Queensland Eating Disorders Service), Tom Scully (Mind Body Well), and Jo Money (Eat Love Live), Suchitra Khurana (The Talbot Centre), Nicole Cashin, Christie Bennett (Live Love Eat), and Aneela Panhwar.

During this forum, speakers supported attendees to identify Standards and Actions across the Stepped System of Care relevant to their role, enabling a sequenced, action-oriented and supported approach to implementing the National Strategy.

Taking action across the stepped system of care

During this forum, we heard from seven speakers who presented on top-down and bottom-up initiatives from across Australia, across service type, and across components of the system of care. These presentations are designed to inspire you for action, provide models or frameworks from which you can adapt to your local context, and provide connections with people who are working in similar contexts or settings.

Mental health professionals: Your role in eating disorders prevention, identification and response

This forum was for all mental health professionals and those that support mental health professionals (e.g. managers, leaders) across role and service setting.

During this forum, NEDC supported attendees to understand their role in the National Strategy, providing information, resources, and support networks to guide them in this work. We heard from Jasmin Watson, occupational therapist, supervisor, CEED Clinical Lead, mental health professional who spoke from the perspective of these different roles about the activities that she has undertaken to enhance service responses to eating disorders.
