What is the role of a dietitian in responding to eating disorders? A workshop to support action across the stepped system of care

Date: Wednesday 20 November

Time: 1:00-2:30pm AEDT (Melb/Sydney daylight savings)

During this special 90-minute workshop, dietitians will be supported to identify their role in the system of care and to devise strategies for driving systems-level change in eating disorders prevention and care. It draws upon NEDC’s stepped system of care framework, the National Eating Disorders Strategy, and implementation science frameworks to guide participants in developing actionable plans. 

Participants will:

  • Develop/deepen their understanding about the eating disorder system of care and the role of dietitians across prevention, identification, and response to eating disorders across role and context and as part of the multidisciplinary team  

  • Develop/deepen their understanding of approaches to systems-level service change to improve care for people experiencing or at risk of an eating disorders, their families, supports and communities 

  • Identify change targets and levers for change at national, regional, and service level within their own contexts which align with the National Strategy 

  • Learn frameworks, models and approaches to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of systems-level change, underpinned by best practice evidence in implementation science  

  • Develop strategies and tools to drive service and system reform relevant to their own context(s), including the identification of information, resources, and connections to support action 

This workshop will be hosted by NEDC, with the support of Amy Hannigan (Queensland Eating Disorders Service), Copeland Winten (Queensland Eating Disorders Service), Tom Scully (Mind Body Well), and Jo Money (Eat Love Live), Suchitra Khurana (The Talbot Centre), Nicole Cashin, Christie Bennett, and Aneela Panhwar.

Presenter bios:

Copeland Winten (APD, CEDC-D) is clinical and research dietitian. She works at the Queensland Eating Disorder Service (QuEDS) in their treatment team.  She is a strong advocate for the dietitian in the therapeutic space and aligns with a weight-neutral, neuro-affirming lens.  She has additional training in psychology and is currently completing her PhD on Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). In addition to her research and clinical work, she provides supervision and training for eating disorder professionals and is a board member for ANZAED. 

Tom Scully is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Clinical Team Leader/Senior Dietitian at Mind Body Well. Tom has a range of clinical experience including work in an eating disorder unit in mental health hospital, and in private practice settings. He enjoy helping people to manage their health in a way that promotes enjoyable eating and a peaceful relationship with food.

Amy Hannigan is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Team Manager at the Queensland Eating Disorder Service (QuEDS).

Facilitator bios:

Aneela Panhwar has been an Accredited Practising Dietitian for 10 years. During this time, she has enjoyed working with clients of all ages and community groups. Her passion lies in assisting clients to understand their relationship with food and empowering them to use nutrition as a means to achieving their life goals. She enjoys working with complex health needs and has particular interests in eating disorders, chronic pain, trauma and neurodivergent communities. The basis of her work is respecting her clients, uniquely approaching barriers to healthy eating and developing individualised treatment plans.

Josephine Money is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician (CEDC), Founder and director of Eat Love Live and co-Founder of Eat Love Live Education. Jo has over 20 years experience, in the Eating disorders field,  providing  client centered, individual, social justice informed nutrition counseling. Jo has experience across a diverse range of settings including private, community and public health and in a variety of models including working with individuals, groups and program development.

Nicole Cashin is an ANZAED Credentialed clinician, size-inclusive, neuro-affirming dietitian and nutritionist. Nicole supports adults experiencing eating disorders (any type), disordered eating, complex relationships with food/body, ARFID, and eating/feeding challenges in context of Autism and ADHD.

Suchitra Khurana is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) with a passion for supporting people and understanding each of their stories about their relationship with food and their body. She has been practicing in a variety of setting over the last 15 years of her nutrition career and currently works at The Talbot Centre. 

Christie Bennett is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Monash University. Since completing her PhD she has worked towards marrying her clinical and research interests. She is continuing to conduct research into the experiences of people with eating disorders. 

Bron Scott is a dietitian and NEDC's Right Care Right Place Project Coordinator. With a dietetics background and lived experience of an eating disorder, she knows firsthand the benefit of a multidisciplinary and coordinated approach to care. Her work builds strong and collaborative relationships that focus on the structures that support access to appropriate, affordable, and timely care particularly in issues relating to nutrition and health.

   

 

Previous Implementation Forums

This can be done.  A forum on the implementation of the National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023-2033 

Date: Wednesday 6 December, 2023

During this forum, speakers supported attendees to identify Standards and Actions across the Stepped System of Care relevant to their role, enabling a sequenced, action-oriented and supported approach to implementing the National Strategy.

Taking action across the stepped system of care

During this forum, we heard from seven speakers who presented on top-down and bottom-up initiatives from across Australia, across service type, and across components of the system of care. These presentations are designed to inspire you for action, provide models or frameworks from which you can adapt to your local context, and provide connections with people who are working in similar contexts or settings.

Mental health professionals: Your role in eating disorders prevention, identification and response

This forum was for all mental health professionals and those that support mental health professionals (e.g. managers, leaders) across role and service setting.

During this forum, NEDC supported attendees to understand their role in the National Strategy, providing information, resources, and support networks to guide them in this work. We heard from Jasmin Watson, occupational therapist, supervisor, CEED Clinical Lead, mental health professional who spoke from the perspective of these different roles about the activities that she has undertaken to enhance service responses to eating disorders.
