The National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023-2033 (National Strategy) provides a clear roadmap to guide sector development and policy decision-making for the next decade.

Everyone has a role to play

The National Strategy outlines 141 Actions that are required to achieve an effective, equitable and coordinated system of care. Each of these Actions has been allocated to a specific stakeholder to ensure clear responsibility for implementation of that activity. Identified stakeholders include:

  • Eating disorder sector
  • Eating disorder service development organisations
  • Eating disorder lived experience organisations
  • Psychosocial and recovery support providers
  • Government
  • Primary Health Networks
  • Local Health Networks
  • Mental health services
  • Health promotion organisations
  • Health services
  • Education, social and community services
  • Professional bodies
  • Researchers
  • Early childhood education
  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Tertiary/vocational education providers/training providers
  • Sports, fitness and performance organisations
  • Social media platform providers/media organisations

You can find a breakdown of the National Strategy Actions by stakeholder group on this factsheet.

Coordination of National Strategy implementation will be led by NEDC.

What can action look like?

There are different types of engagement or action for different people. This can involve providing leadership and decision-making to create systemic or service change. Or it might be a change in your own practice or way of communicating about body, weight and shape. It could also be about supporting others to better respond to eating disorders. Below are a few different ways you could explore your role in implementing the National Strategy.

Supporting you to take action

NEDC is available to support all stakeholders to implement those National Strategy Actions relevant to their role. You will see on the right of the screen a number of resources available to get you started including planning tools, action and resource factsheets, and video recordings.

If you would like personalised support, please reach out to the NEDC team via email.

Getting involved in existing initiatives

You can find a summary of initiatives happening across Australia which align with the National Strategy via our National Strategy Action Hub. There may be opportunity for you to get involved in those, including support with promotion.

NEDC facilitates tri-monthly online National Strategy Forums which bring together diverse stakeholders to share information and resources and to create connections with others in this work. Find out about our next upcoming Forum here.
