Understanding Eating Disorders in Young People

Butterfly

About this event

For professionals working with young people

This introductory session provides an overview of the risk and protective factors for and signs and symptoms of eating disorders. It gives advice on approaching young people you may be concerned about and explains how to support the recovery of a young person with an eating disorder. It concludes with guidance on fostering a supportive environment to support young people's body image.

Format: 2hr live webinar hosted by Zoom (no recording available)

Suitable for: Teachers, youth workers and community professionals working with young people.

Please note: This is not aimed at clinicians nor does it offer advice on case management. There is some overlap with Butterfly's Body Image Training for Educators.  You may wish to choose to do one or the other, rather than both.

You will explore:

  • The spectrum of behaviours from healthy to unhealthy to clinical eating disorders
  • Diet culture and disordered eating
  • Risk and protective factors for eating disorders
  • Warning signs and the importance of early intervention
  • Supporting treatment and recovery, including support plans and meal supervision
  • Educating abut eating disorders and supporting peers
  • Creating a supportive environment and evidence based approaches to prevention.
