Training outline
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a typically misunderstood but prevalent psychiatric disorder, which has historically received limited attention in the body image field. This one-day workshop will provide a thorough overview of BDD, focusing on practical skills to implement psychological assessment and intervention, through a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) lens. The workshop will include case studies, role plays, and practical skill building exercises, covering the following content:
-
Assessing for the presence and severity of BDD symptoms, including muscle dysmorphia, and differential diagnosis of BDD, eating disorders and body image concerns
-
Implementing a range of key CBT techniques including ritual/response prevention, behavioural experiments and exposure hierarchies
-
Learning and practising targeted body image strategies, including mirror retraining, reducing body checking and self-acceptance skills
Learning outcomes:
-
Participants will develop an in-depth understanding of BDD, and increased skills and confidence in assessing and formulating different BDD presentations, including muscle dysmorphia
-
Participants will actively implement a range of practical skills to provide effective psychological treatment for BDD
