Moving toward positive body image using assessments and interventions in eating disorder treatment

About this event
Masterclass - Body image is a complex intersection of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cultural considerations with the potential for disturbance (and well-being) to emerge at various points in development and treatment. Negative body image often precedes disordered eating and serves as a driving force for the onset and maintenance of maladaptive eating behaviors. Positive body image may prevent the emergence and progression of disordered eating as well as facilitate eating disorder recovery. A common treatment goal for clients in eating disorder recovery is to pursue a positive body image; however, this goal often seems out of reach. Likewise, providers can be challenged with how to best promote positive body image that is grounded in effective interventions. In this masterclass, we will first operationalize positive body image by identifying its components based on recent research. We will then provide practical ways to infuse positive body image into evidence-based practices and/or as a stand-alone treatment. In doing so, we will illustrate how to incorporate body image assessments in treatment and offer clinical case examples, borrowing from our Positive Body Image Workbook (Wood-Barcalow, Tylka & Judge, 2021). Overall, this masterclass is designed to help providers guide their clients toward a healthier relationship with their bodies.
