WAEDOCS Reconceptualising Weight Goals ½ Day Workshop
WAEDOCS Reconceptualising Weight Goals ½ Day Workshop

About this event
This workshop is suitable for ALL clinicians working with people living with an eating
disorder.
Clinicians have begun to recognise the limitations of some of the guidelines espoused by
evidence-based treatment approaches that were developed and manualized over 20 years ago.
A recent paper (Byrne & Fursland, 2024) offered suggestions for updating several areas of
focus, one of which was treatment weight goals. This workshop will highlight the importance of
reconceptualising weight restoration goals.
This collaborative workshop will include information on:
• The danger of prolonged weight suppression
• The importance of appropriate weight restoration for long term recovery
• Explore looking beyond the “healthy weight” range and the target weights mentioned in
Family Based Treatment (FBT) and Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E)
manuals
• Proposal of an algorithm (after Peebles et al, 2024) for calculating adolescent weight goals
and a model for estimating appropriate weight goals for adults
• Via case examples, illustrate the application of these algorithms
Participants will break into small groups to work through additional case examples. There will be
ample time for discussion about the strengths and limitations of our proposed methods for
assessing weight goals.
