March 2022 Federal Budget

NEDC welcomes the further commitment from the Federal Government to improving the system of care for people experiencing eating disorders, including a 25% lift in NEDC’s funding for the next financial year, announced in the 2022 Federal Budget. In the budget, the Government specified NEDC’s role in ongoing development of clinical resources, implementation of the National Eating Disorders Strategy, support for clinical workforce development, and provision of independent, expert advice to Government.

"It is notable and very welcome that the budget again made eating disorders a focus,” Dr Beth Shelton, National Director NEDC, said. “The funding support for NEDC is a significant vote of confidence in our work to build the system of care for people experiencing eating disorders."

Along with NEDC’s funding, there was a major allocation of $20 million over three years for eating disorder-specific services. The Butterfly Foundation received $1.1 million to continue their work with the peer workforce project, advising and supporting state and territory community-based residential eating disorder treatment centres, and the Butterfly Body Bright program, and $1.3 million for Wandi Nerida to ensure people with severe eating disorders can access treatment through their residential centre.
