Functional Connectivity-informed Individualised Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (FUNCTIAN) – An Open-Label Proof of Concept
About this study
This clinical trial investigates the use of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) in people who have Anorexia Nervosa (AN), to see if it might help improve their symptoms. rTMS is a non-invasive method of brain stimulation that involves the repeated application of magnetic pulses to your head via a ‘coil’. rTMS is an established treatment for depression which has been proven to work in numerous clinical trials. Few studies have looked into rTMS treatment for AN, but results from those have been promising.

ParticipantsParticipants must meet the following criteria:
Current diagnosis of AN (can be assessed at screening if not formally diagnosed)
Age 18 or older
Body Mass Index (BMI) between 15 and 18
Illness duration of over 3 years

What is InvolvedThis clinical trial will enrol 20 participants. Participants will first attend a baseline session, during which participant’s eating disorder symptoms and psychological symptoms will be measured. Participants will then have an MRI scan of their brain; this scan will be used to determine the individualised brain target. Participants will then receive rTMS treatments at this location.
