Two Online Workshops with Dr Mandy Goldstein: Trauma Informed Care (1) and Trauma & EDs: Introduction to Trauma and Eating Disorders (2)
Join Dr Mandy Goldstein over two workshops exploring the impact of trauma on eating disorders.
Attend one, or both!
Workshop 1: Trauma Informed Care (TIC)
Friday 23rd May 2025
9.00am - 12.30pm
Recent years have seen a growing recognition of the significant impact of trauma on individuals and those who support them.
This workshop is open to anyone working in an environment where those who have experienced trauma may seek care/support, and will be useful for both mental health and non-mental health trained clinicians. It will introduce the key concepts of trauma and the differences between TIC and trauma treatment, as well as support attendees to understand the impact of trauma from a multitude of perspectives. It will introduce the principles of TIC, presenting ideas around how we can start to reconsider our environments to ensure they are trauma informed; and to recalibrate our responses to what we might consider “challenging” client behaviour, from a trauma informed lens. Case examples will be provided with opportunity for small group discussion.
Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish between TIC and trauma treatment;
- Recognise the impacts of trauma;
- Identify key principles of TIC care, illustrated by case examples;
- Start to consider changes to their practice and environments towards becoming trauma informed.
Workshop 2: Introduction to Trauma and Eating Disorders
Friday 6th June 2025
9.30am - 4.00pm
This introductory workshop is for mental health clinicians only; it aims to provide a thorough overview of the research on trauma and EDs to date, and an understanding of both PTSD and complex trauma presentations, and how they might impact someone with an ED in different ways. It is a clinically focused workshop intended to support mental health trained clinicians to better conceptualise and work with those who have experienced trauma; as such, attendance is limited to those with mental health training.
The workshop will focus on developing skills to formulate in more complex ways when this comorbidity is present, and to start to consider a framework for treatment that is both evidence based and evidence informed, considering dilemmas such as which concern to address first and whether the literature indicates concurrent or sequential treatment. The workshop will assume an understanding of eating disorders and their treatment, and will focus on the provision of information on neurobiology and treatment from trauma field, introducing clinicians to the field more broadly, and hopes to encourage attendees towards further development of their specific skills to treat trauma. Discussion will be illustrated with case examples and practical strategies for more complex case conceptualisation in guiding clinical work.Learning Objectives:
Attendees will develop:
- Improved understanding of trauma, and the research base guiding its treatment, including the difference between PTSD and complex trauma.
- Improved understanding of the impact on the ED of a trauma history, and vice versa, when these presentations co-occur.
- Capacity to formulate in more complex ways when clients present with an ED and either PTSD or a history of complex trauma.
- Improved capacity to use the formulation to develop a treatment framework, informed by the evidence, and supporting the treatment of both presentations where appropriate.
