National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Lived Experience (Peer) Workforce Census

About this study

The Lived Experience (Peer) workforce brings deep knowledge, strength and care to mental health and suicide prevention. Yet many people continue to work without the recognition, support or clarity they deserve. The Census is a chance to change that.

Institution

The Social Research Centre / The Australian Centre for Social Innovation on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Project End Date

24 April 2026

Participants

This Census is for people who are in roles where their lived experience of mental health challenges and/or suicide – and the related knowledge, skills, or training – is an essential requirement of their role. Using lived experience means drawing on your personal experiences or experiences supporting someone (as a family, carer, or kin) through mental health challenges and/or suicide, including distress, crisis, attempts, ideation, self-harm, or bereavement. If you are unsure whether your role qualifies, please consider whether your lived experience is a formal requirement or an essential requirement of your work. If this applies to your role, you are encouraged to participate.

What is Involved

The Census will take about 15 minutes to complete depending on your answers. Please allow enough time to complete the Census in one go as responses will only save once they are submitted at the end. Responses will only be saved once you reach the end of the Census and click ‘Next’ to submit. If you exit before submitting, your responses will not be saved.

If you are unsure about how to answer any question, please select the response which corresponds most closely to how you feel and your experiences. You must answer each question before you can move to the next. We advise you to take care and look after your wellbeing while completing the Census. This might be by taking your time or having a support person with you.

Your responses are confidential and will be re-identified.

By sharing your insights, you will contribute to a stronger, more sustainable and more informed Lived Experience (Peer) workforce across Australia.
