Continued funding for eating disorder initiatives

NEDC welcomes the Federal Government’s commitment of $26.0 million over three years to support people experiencing eating disorders and their families and supports. This funding includes an extension of NEDC’s funding through the 2026–27 and 2027–28 financial years.

The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) announcement also confirms continued funding for a range of important programs across the sector, including:

  • EDFA’s Fill the Gap counselling program, providing tailored, online, one-on-one counselling support for carers and young supporters

  • The Butterfly Foundation’s Next Steps intensive outpatient service, offering online care and support after residential or hospital treatment

  • Eating Disorders Queensland’s bITE, a community-based, early intervention program that focused on connection and nourishment

  • headspace and InsideOut’s workforce upskilling program, building knowledge and skills across headspace services nationally

  • InsideOut’s eClinic and GP Hub, providing digital treatment options and workforce support tools

  • ANZAED’s delivery of the credentialing system, helping people to connect with dietitians, GPs and mental health professionals that are skilled in eating disorders

  • Butterfly Foundation’s Body Bright program, supporting school-led initiatives to promote positive body image in Australian primary schools

  • The continued work of the Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre, supporting the growth of the research workforce and delivery of priority research studies

  • NEDC's Right Care, Right Place project, a partnership with NT, Western Queensland, North Western Melbourne and Adelaide PHNs to build and integrate local systems

These initiatives align with the National Eating Disorders Strategy and include many of those initiatives called for in EDA's One Voice, representing key system-building investments across the continuum of the system of care .

NEDC looks forward to continuing to work with Government to implement the National Strategy and to ensure that broader mental health and health reforms meaningfully include eating disorder responses.
