Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) for Eating Disorders: The Who, How & Why

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) for Eating Disorders: The Who, How & Why

About this event

Shelly Hindle-Sinclair presents 12hrs of training in DBT for eating disorders | Zoom, July 20, 27, August 2 & 9, 10am-5pm AEST

Overview

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a multi-modal, team-based approach that has strong evidence for the treatment of problems relating to emotion regulation. It has shown to be efficacious for people with complex, high-risk and difficult-to-treat problems. Initial clinical trials showed efficacy for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, and DBT has since been applied to many other clinical presentations.

In the last decade there has been growing support for using DBT for the treatment of Eating Disorders; there is a subset of clients who do not respond well to standard ED treatment, and seem to need a more intensive approach. Commonly, these clients also exhibit multi-problematic, difficult-to-treat presentations and emotional dysregulation. Emerging literature indicates that this population may benefit from adaptations of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

This 12-hour training will include an overview of the current models of DBT for Eating Disorders being applied internationally and research outcomes to date. Participants will also learn how to formulate eating disorders using a DBT framework; how to prioritise and target eating disorders in the context of co-occurring problems, suicidality and self-harming behaviours, and behaviours that interfere with treatment; and learn how to apply commonly used DBT skills specifically for disordered eating behaviours and problems.

This is an introductory training providing a broad overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy as it is applied to treating Eating Disorders. No prior training in DBT is required. There will be practical learning and exercises that will assist participants in working with their current clients, however, this is not a comprehensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Participants will receive guidance around implementing DBT in their own services including DBT skills training groups, DBT consultation teams and further training options and pathways to establish and deliver a comprehensive DBT programme.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Understand how Dialectical Behavior Therapy is applied for multi-problem, high-risk Eating Disorders
  • Identify who DBT may be useful for and understand the theoretical rationale for this
  • Learn practical strategies drawn from DBT (relating both to individual treatment and skills training group) and how these are applied for Eating Disorders.

Pre-event activities

Registered participants will have access to online pre-event activities.
