Training outline

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a typically misunderstood but prevalent psychiatric disorder, which has historically received limited attention in the body image field. This one-day workshop will provide a thorough overview of BDD, focusing on practical skills to implement psychological assessment and intervention, through a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) lens. The workshop will include case studies, role plays, and practical skill building exercises, covering the following content:

  • Assessing for the presence and severity of BDD symptoms, including muscle dysmorphia, and differential diagnosis of BDD, eating disorders and body image concerns

  • Implementing a range of key CBT techniques including ritual/response prevention, behavioural experiments and exposure hierarchies

  • Learning and practising targeted body image strategies, including mirror retraining, reducing body checking and self-acceptance skills

Learning outcomes:

  • Participants will develop an in-depth understanding of BDD, and increased skills and confidence in assessing and formulating different BDD presentations, including muscle dysmorphia

  • Participants will actively implement a range of practical skills to provide effective psychological treatment for BDD

Presenter:

Dr Fran Beilharz is a clinical psychologist and credentialed eating disorder clinician at Mind Body Well. Her clinical work focuses on eating disorders, body image concerns and body dysmorphic disorder, from a weight-inclusive and social justice oriented framework. Fran completed her Doctoral thesis exploring visual processing among BDD, and developing a novel treatment focused on changing visual perception.

Registration includes:

Access to a pre-recorded 2 hour Masterclass facilitated by Fran Beilharz - ‘An Introduction to Body Dysmorphic Disorder’, which forms the pre-training requirement for this workshop. (Masterclass is typically valued at $95).

Registration will soon be available for our live in-person workshop in Melbourne (March 15th, 2024). A recorded version will also be available for those unable to attend live. Please express your interest via the link below to receive information once registration is open (this is an expression of interest only, no commitment is required).
