2–Day Workshop for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – Avoidant/ Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (CBT-AR)

This two-day workshop describes cognitive behavioural therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). People living with ARFID cannot meet their nutritional needs, due to sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, and/or lack of interest in eating. ARFID was added to the psychological nomclamature ten years ago, but research, management and treatment of this disorder is still building. This workshop will outline CBT-AR as a novel manualised treatment for children, adolescents and adults. There is preliminary research on feasibility, and acceptability of children and adults and current trials being held at Massachusetts General Hospital, USA and Queensland University of Technology, Australia. This workshop will fill an important gap for clinicians by providing specialised training in ARFID (CBT-AR).
This collaborative workshop will include information on:
− Learn about tools to provide diagnostic clarification
− Describe how to provide CBT-AR in the individual and family setting.
− Gain an understanding on how the multidisciplinary team is important for ARFID treatment.
Day 1:
− What is ARFID, diagnostic clarification, current research (including my own)
− Stage 1 of CBT-AR
Day 2:
− CBT-AR stages 2,3,4. Case studies.
This skill building training is suitable for any clinician of the multidisciplinary team providing support for those living with ARFID and clinicians wanting to provide CBT-AR. It is recommended clinicians have an understanding or ARFID. Through the day attendees will be provided with didactic, interactive and experiential practise opportunities.

About the presenter

Guest Trainer Bio: Copeland Winten (APD | AN | CEDC)
She is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology researching ARFID. A focus on the lived experience of ARFID in Australian treatment context and the provision of CBT-AR led by a dietitian. Copeland has worked across various clinical settings and currently works for Queensland Eating Disorders Service (QuEDS) in their day program. In 2023 she held the Massachusetts General Hospital Eating Disorders Clinical and Research Program Summer Fellowship and continues to work with the team to support provision of CBT-AR. In addition to her Masters of Dietetic Studies, Copeland holds an undergraduate degree in psychology. She is passionate about providing a weight neutral, HAES affirming and neurodivergent supporting treatment.
