About this event

Dr Amy Talbot presents 18 hours of LIVE in-person online training in ARFID across the Lifespan: Applying Theory to Practice |

Online via Zoom (October 2025)

TIME: 9:00am - 4:00pm (AEDT)

SUMMARY: With the introduction of ARFID in the DSM-5 there is increased awareness of feeding challenges and increased interest and research focus on developing interventions for ARFID. However, research to guide intervention is still in the early stages. A survey by Magel and colleagues in 2020 revealed that less than half of surveyed health professionals had heard of ARFID despite more than two-thirds having seen patients with ARFID, and that overall respondents to the survey felt ill-equipped to assess or treat patients with ARFID. This is consistent with feedback from those with a lived experience of ARFID and their families, who report a myriad of challenges and negative experiences associated with help-seeking.

This 3-day workshop will review the main theoretical models of the aetiology and maintenance of ARFID and outline a process for utilising these models in conjunction with insights from lived experience to inform treatment planning and selection in practice. Participants will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice using case discussion and reflection questions for service planning.

SCHEDULE (Two or three day attendance options)

  • Day 1: Background and Theoretical Models
  • Day 2: Interventions for Children
  • Day 3: Interventions for Adults, including CBT-AR

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Provide an overview of predisposing, precipitating and maintaining factors to enhance assessment and clinical formulation skills
  • Provide an overview of the evidence base and currently available interventions including transdisciplinary perspectives for ARFID presentations across the lifespan.
