This 7-hour workshop over 2 days introduces attendees to Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM), one the four outpatient therapies for adult anorexia nervosa recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2017. The therapy, developed in New Zealand, and evaluated in Australia, allows an informed but flexible approach to the treatment of anorexia nervosa.
Professor Tracey Wade will explain the two components of the therapy: specialist management and a supportive client-centred focus. She will provide evidence of its effectiveness. An overview of meta-skills for effective therapy will be presented. Different themes in client centred focus will also be explored, along with resources to do this in way that best supports recovery in an eating disorder. Finally, therapists will self-assess their readiness and ability to do this type of work in their clinical setting.
The workshop is suitable for any level of competence, from beginner to advanced. The format will be a mix of didactic and interactive exercises, utilising some video role plays to illustrate complex techniques. By the end of the workshop, participants should expect to:
- Understand the meta-skills that guide effective SSCM.
- Have working knowledge of SSCM and feel confident in using this with clients under supervision.
- Work more effectively with therapy non-negotiables in eating disorders.
- Understand how to select and work with client-centred issues as augmentations to SSCM.
