(COMBINED Day 1 and Day 2 Body Image Training) Seeing The Whole Picture: Personalised Strategies For Body Image Healing

Eating Disorders Training Australia

About this event

From the team at Eating Disorders Training Australia (EDTA) comes a brand new online training designed to equip you with the skills to conceptualise and confidently support clients in the often complex space of improving body image.

Many existing body image resources focus solely on changing the individual without considering their broader life experiences, cultural context, or the systemic factors that contribute to body dissatisfaction. They often overlook the importance of personalisation and attunement to each client’s unique experience. This training takes a different approach.

On Day 1, you will learn to work with a comprehensive and personalised visual metaphor that simplifies the multifaceted contributors to body dissatisfaction. This framework is applicable to all clients experiencing body image concerns, whether or not they have an eating disorder. You’ll be guided to use this tool collaboratively with clients to implement meaningful change, drawing on evidence-based strategies delivered in a trauma-informed and weight-neutral way.

You’ll also build your own repertoire of experiential skills for delivering body image work and grow your confidence in tailoring support to meet each client’s needs.

Learning outcomes for Day 1:

• Develop a personalised visual metaphor that simplifies the complex individual, social, and cultural factors contributing to body dissatisfaction

• Understand the different body image goals and philosophies, and feel more confident in helping clients engage with practical strategies to support an approach that aligns with their unique needs

• Use pragmatic, evidence-informed strategies that target the present-day factors maintaining body dissatisfaction

On Day 2, we expand and dig deeper, exploring how to integrate understandings of the individual’s past, life events, modelling, comments and pivotal moments to continue to work on reducing body dissatisfaction and promote body satisfaction. We consider ways layers of socio-cultural factors set the scene for body dissatisfaction to grow and how to make changes and buffer from some of these harmful messages. We explore specific skills and therapeutic techniques to support people to move away from narratives such as ‘my body is a problem’ to ‘we have a cultural problem with bodies.

Learning outcomes Day 2:

• Develop an advanced understanding of body image treatment principles and how to apply them in practice

• Draw on the personalised visual metaphor introduced on Day One to explore how past experiences, vulnerability factors, and socio-cultural influences interact to underpin and maintain body dissatisfaction

• Expand your knowledge of the complex layers of cultural influence and the ongoing cultural climate that contribute to body dissatisfaction

• Learn how to apply therapeutic strategies that support healing from past events that have impacted body image and foster change

• Discover ways to support and empower clients to shift their cultural micro-climates and create buffers against harmful broader societal messages

• Build confidence in facilitating therapeutic conversations and co-creating new, more compassionate narratives about the body

Who is this for?

• Clinicians and therapists working across multiple modalities & those looking to build a comprehensive understanding of body image work

• Practitioners both new to body image work and those with more advanced experience

• For clinicians seeking to build skills in safe, compassionate, and lived experience-centred practice
