Evaluating a stepped-care approach to binge eating treatment

About this study

Starts

10 February 2025

Ends

31 December 2026

Participants

Any individual over 18 who speaks English, with a smartphone and recurrent binge eating.

What is Involved

Participants will complete brief online surveys at baseline, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. All participants will complete a brief online psychoeducation module, with those who do not show early improvement after two weeks randomly allocated to a six-week online CBT program, online DBT program, or waitlist control. Participants allocated to the CBT and DBT conditions will complete self-guided online treatment programs over six weeks, while those in the waitlist condition will receive access to their preferred program after the study. The study aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of this stepped-care approach for reducing binge eating symptoms.

This project aims to evaluate a stepped-care approach for the treatment of binge eating in adults. All participants will initially receive a brief online psychoeducation intervention, with those who do not show an early response after 2-weeks subsequently randomised to either a digital cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program, a digital dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) program, or a waitlist control. The study will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of this stepped-care model in reducing binge eating symptoms.
